The Mexikanemi, or Texas Mexican Mafia, is a Mexican-American prison and street gang created in 1984 in the institutions of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
The first members of the organisation developed a ‘constitution’ that governed the organisation’s activities and declared San Antonio, Texas, as its capital. Upon their release from prison, members and potential members were ordered to report to the organisation’s leadership, which oversaw their hometowns. As the number of members grew and the organisation expanded its activities inside and outside the prison system, it established a presence in more and more cities across Texas.
The Mexikanemi operates separately from the original California-based La Eme, and its members consider themselves primarily connected to Aztlan, a former Mexican territory in the southwestern United States.
The Mexikanemi is involved in a wide range of illegal activities, including drug trafficking, raiding and money laundering. In October 2022, one of Mexikanemi’s executives was sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role in the distribution of methamphetamine and heroin in the San Antonio area. During the investigation, authorities seized tens of kilograms of methamphetamine and a large number of firearms.
