The Global Prison Trends 2023 report on trends in the global development of national prison systems in 2023 emphasizes that modern prison systems are characterized by the increasing role of violent criminal subcultures in prisons, which is a key challenge for most prison systems around the world. That is why in this article we aim to analyze the phenomenon of prison gangs as a special form of criminal organizations in the penitentiary systems of modern foreign countries.
Prison subcultures formed within informal prison hierarchies and their inherent prison violence are objective elements of modern power relations, an integral part of power relations and at the same time a product of the spread of panoptic discipline in twenty-first century society.
The simulacrum of prison subculture-at least in its contemporary manifestations-is not about prison subculture as such, either in general or for the most part. Instead, it refers to a properly organized and deeply thought-out system of informal punitive and repressive power that in many national jurisdictions successfully competes with formal power institutions both in prison and in free society. At the same time, it is a mechanism for the forced seizure of material assets from representatives of the middle and lower levels of prison hierarchies (and not only). This organized system of punitive and repressive power and, at the same time, a mechanism of permanent extortion and redistribution of material values, in fact, disguises itself as a prison subculture, forming its simulacrum.

В’язничні ієрархії
У доповіді Global Prison Trends 2023 щодо тенденцій глобального розвитку національних пенітенціарних систем у 2023 році наголошується, що сучасні пенітенціарні системи характеризуються збільшенням ролі насильницьких кримінальних субкультур у в’язницях, що є ключовим викликом для більшості пенітенціарних систем у всьому світі. Саме тому в цій статті нами ставиться за мету провести аналіз феномену в’язничних банд як особливої форми злочинних організацій у пенітенціарних системах сучасних зарубіжних держав.
В’язничні субкультури, сформовані у рамках неформальних в’язничних ієрархій, та притаманне їм в’язничне насильство – це об’єктивні елементи сучасних відносин влади, невід’ємна складова відносин влади та водночас продукт поширення дисципліни паноптичного зразку в суспільстві ХХІ століття.
Симулякр в’язничної субкультури – принаймні в її сучасних проявах – взагалі або здебільшого – не стосується в’язничної субкультури як такої. Натомість йдеться про належним чином організовану та глибоко продуману систему неформальної карально-репресивної влади, яка у багатьох національних юрисдикціях становить успішну конкуренцію формальним владним інституціям як у в’язниці, так і у вільному суспільстві. Водночас йдеться про механізм примусового вилучення матеріальних цінностей у представників середніх та нижчих рівнів в’язничних ієрархій (і не тільки). Ця організована система карально-репресивної влади та водночас механізм перманентного вимагання й перерозподілу матеріальних цінностей, власне, і маскується під в’язничну субкультур, формуючи її симулякр.
